How consumers use technology and its impact on their lives

Around 5.26 billion people around the world are using or have access to the internet. That is equivalent to 64.4% of the total world’s population.

This has increased significantly from when the internet was first introduced. Back in the 1990s when the internet was first accessible
to the public and not just for universities, services and health care, figures were showing that 16 million people had access to the internet. This is only 0.4% of the world’s population. This is a large jump in the number of users over the last 20-30 years.

In the beginning, the internet was only accessible through wired up computers. Today, the internet can be accessed through tablets, phones and even watches, all with wireless connection.

With the internet and devices limitless availability, consumers can complete tasks quickly and easily. Questions can be answered, products can be purchased and videos can be watched thanks to the ever growing speeds and developments of Wi-Fi/ 5G technologies. Smart devices have definitely increased in popularity over the last 3-5 years.

88% people own a smart phone

57% people own a laptop/computer

23% people own a smart watch

52% people own a tablet.

Each year, companies such as Apple and Samsung release a new highly anticipated product. Each product is faster, bigger and better than the one before. Consumers research the new product, find it at the best price and purchase the product as soon as its available.

Now that smart devices allow access to webstores, large retailers and marketplace purchases are easy and more efficient for the consumer. With 5G/Wi-Fi connections improving rapidly, the quality of videos and streaming times have improved. Making online video consumption a popular trend in 2022.

According to a recent survey, 66% of UK people have admitted to watching a video online to learn about a brand or product. This gives the consumer an opportunity to gain a better understanding and discover any faults or perks to the products.

YouTube is one of the largest video sharing platforms. Over the last 10 years, it has grown in popularity. In 2012, there were 0.8 billion annual users. In 2021, this figure had risen to 2.6 billion users. YouTube can be used to review products, gain information, share feedback and keep in touch with other users much easier and more conveniently than previously.

Consumers use of technology is constantly updating and keeping with modern society. With the current quality of wireless connections, £22.8 billion per year is spent by consumers on public transport.

Online channels are accessible in order to interact with brands and products while also helping to influence consumers decisions.

Customers today are more likely to own more than 1 device. A google report shows that 90% of consumers now use more than one device to complete a single task online.

Social media has helped influence consumers with over 54% of users using a social media platform to gain access, compare, review or research information about a product/service.

With the growth of technology, consumers expectations are now higher than before. Consumers expect responsive, relevant and targeted information from companies and products.

To summarise, the number of people who use online technology has largely increased over the last 3-5 years. The number of people who own or use smart devices to access technology has also increased greatly.

With both a positive and negative outlook, digital technology is only on the rise and the impact It has on consumers lives is going to continue changing too.
